IMS & Dry Needling
A targeted, needle-based technique that releases tight, shortened muscles and calms chronic pain that other treatments haven't resolved.
Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) and functional dry needling use thin, solid needles inserted directly into tight, shortened muscle bands. The goal is to trigger a release in the muscle and reset the nervous system signals that are keeping it locked up — often relieving pain that has been resistant to other treatments.
Our Approach
IMS is especially effective for chronic pain that has a neuropathic component — pain that persists even after the original injury has healed because the muscles and nerves around it are still overactive. Our practitioners assess your movement patterns and muscle tension to map out exactly which muscles need treatment, then combine needling with manual therapy and exercise for lasting results.
Conditions We Treat
Chronic Low Back Pain
Releasing the deep spinal muscles that often stay tight long after the original injury.
Neck & Shoulder Tension
Effective for the persistent tightness and trigger points common with desk work and poor posture.
Tendinopathy (Tennis & Golfer's Elbow)
Treating the muscles that load the tendon, complementing shockwave therapy for stubborn cases.
Tension-Type Headaches
Releasing tight neck and jaw muscles that refer pain into the head.
Sciatica & Nerve-Related Pain
Calming overactive muscles around irritated nerves to reduce radiating pain.
Chronic Muscle Tightness
For tightness that persists after an injury has otherwise healed and isn't responding to stretching alone.
What to Expect From Your IMS Visit
Assessment & Muscle Mapping — Your practitioner identifies the specific muscles contributing to your pain through movement and palpation testing.
Explanation & Consent — A clear explanation of the technique, what you'll feel, and what to expect afterward — you're in control throughout.
Needle Insertion & Release — Thin needles are inserted into the affected muscles, often producing a brief twitch as the muscle releases.
Post-Treatment Care — Mild soreness for a day or two is normal — we'll guide you on stretching, hydration, and movement afterward.
Progressive Treatment Plan — Most people see the best results over a short series of sessions, often combined with physiotherapy.
